ResumoThe ion optics of pair of grids is one of the most important aspect in ion thrusters since it determines the e±ciency which ions are extracted and accelerated from the plasma, and, therefore, in°uencing the overall e±ciency of ion thrusters. Ray tracing and Particle in Cell (PIC) have been the most common numerical methods to study ion optics. In the ¯rst one, the location and the shape of the ion-emitting surface are both established analytically assuming steady state, and the ion trajectories are traced by numerical integration of equations of motion. This introduces uncertainties on the exact location and shape of the ion-emitting surface, besides, the stationary representation of the ion beam envelope. In contrast, PIC codes can simulate both the ion extraction from a plasma and the ion optics dynamically, once de¯ned the initial conditions. In this work, the initial conditions were established integrating the Poissons equation from the plasma sheath towards a facing electrode, assuming one-dimensional sheath approximation. The normalized potential variation (´ = ¡eV=KT) is, thus, given as function of a normalized distance (» = x=de), and the normalized plasma density is estimated assuming Maxwellian electron distribution function. The characteristics of the ion-emitting surface are, therefore, dictated initially by the electrostatic conditions between the plasma bulk and the facing electrode, and changing in the time by the charge evolution through the plasma sheath until a steady state to be reached. The present treatment has produced theoretical results in good agreement to previous experimental results published by Aston1. The ion optics study was carried out using KARAT PIC code for di®erent geometric and electrical parameters for a pair of plane grids.
